GRE Biochemistry Subject Test – GRE Scoring Process

  • The scoring process in the general or subject GRE is quite different from that of any other such competitive tests. The number of questions answered, cannot exactly estimate the marks that can be scored from the test. Once the questions are answered, the evaluators segregate the questions on the basis of their difficulty. Naturally, marks allotted to each question is not the same. In paper-based tests of like that of Biochemistry, the scores are calculated in a score equating method.
  • First, the raw score is calculated, i.e. one fourth of the number of incorrect answers are deducted from the number of correct answers. Then, with the method of equating process, the raw score is converted into scaled score. Despite all the question segregation, on the basis of their difficulties, this method more or less equates the scores rewarded.
  • The total marks are scored on the basis of a scale of 200-990 and in an increment of 10 points. In case of subjects like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology, etc, scores are awarded on a 20-99 scale. The entire method of calculating marks is divided into two parts: First, the raw score of a student is calculated. Then the raw score is converted to the scaled score. The Scaled score is calculated within the limit of 200 to 900. Sub scores are also given for the three sub-divisions in Biochemistry: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics. Again, the raw sub scores are converted to scaled scores. Apart from that, there is also the percentile method of scoring.
  • Reviewing copies of biochemistry subject papers is possible. You just have to mail your request for re-evaluation and send $30. The review result can be expected within six months from the first time evaluation was done.
  • In case of paper-based tests, the institutions will not have any knowledge of the fact whether the candidate has appeared in the test or not. The institutions also do not keep any record of your previous GRE scores. The score of an individual will be disclosed only to that person, institutes offering higher education or any other higher degrees and to accredited sponsors for granting graduate fellowship.
  • The scores are disclosed once your request reaches the authority. The institutes and even the sponsor organizations won’t have any information about your score without your permission. But, the details of your score can be used for statistics and keeping record of performance trend in GRE. In fact, in this case, the name of the candidate will never be disclosed. In certain cases, your score can be disclosed because of a lawsuit or to any government organization.
