Subject GRE Test Results

Subject GRE test results

The scores for the Subject GRE tests can be viewed the moment you finish your test. The last question that appears on your screen once you are done with the test is whether you would want to have a look at your scores. So that means you see your score the moment you are finish the exam but then the official scores will reach you after 21 days from the test date.

Subject GRE tests are not published anywhere. You will receive a scaled score within a range of 200-800. If you do very badly, only then can your score be lower than 200. Copies of your Subject GRE scores are available. You can also request for an original copy to be sent to the Graduation College from the examining body itself which will be reaching there by the prescribed closing date.

How to interpret Subject GRE Test Scores?

The score calculation procedure for the traditional paper-based Subject GRE test is based on an intricate ratio between the number of questions answered correctly and the difficulty level of the questions on the test form. This means that a similar number of correct responses on variant tests may not necessarily result in the same reported score.

Score equating is a very significant score adjusting process when it comes to Subject GRE tests. In this method, the number of answered questions is also figured into the calculation of the reported score as it confines the number that can be answered properly.

The test scoring is a two-tier process,

  • First, a raw score is calculated, which, is the number of questions answered correctly subtracting 1/4th of the questions you answered incorrectly.
  • Then, the raw score is changed to a scaled score through a process termed equating that records the differences among the difficulty levels of various test editions.

A single total score is reported on a 200 to 990 score scale in a ten-point percentage increase while the score range for any exact test is usually smaller.

Canceling subject GRE test scores

If you can’t notch up your target score, you can take the GRE again in the next calendar month. Keep in mind that most of the top programs will consider the higher of two GRE scores. Some will even consider a third set of results. But none of the top programs will take seriously a strong score that shows on a report next to three, four or more weak scores.

If you decide you don’t wish to see your score, click on “no” and the computer will cancel your results and your performance will not be logged in the ETS databank. Your record will show you took the test, but no school will ever know how you did. Neither will you – it is impossible to cancel the exam once you’ve seen your scores. Since the exam is expensive and you’ll be (hopefully) well prepared when you take it, you probably shouldn’t cancel your score unless your exam becomes a clear disaster.

Cancellation of GRE subject test scores by ETS

Now, let us discuss about a few possibilities when your Subject GRE scores can get cancelled by the ETS. We are now giving some of the instances.

The most obvious way this can happen if you get tangled in Test Security issues. The ETS has a few standards set for administering the test, the first among them being giving all test-takers equal opportunities to showcase their abilities and to ensure that no one gets unfair advantage over others. Keeping these two purposes in mind, ETS reserves the exclusive right to cancel any test score whenever it senses a testing irregularity or an apparent discrepancy in your identification, an act of plagiarism or misconduct, etc. If ETS cancels your scores for any of the above reasons, it notifies you that the scores have been cancelled. But the particular reason may not be disclosed to you unless you are authorized to know it.

  • The testing irregularities may include problems with administration of a test, improper access to test content or other emergencies like natural disasters. In situations like this, ETS may refuse to score the test or even cancel the score.
  • If the authorities at the test center feel that there are discrepancies in your identification documents, they can dismiss you from the test center. So do carry the prescribed documents to avoid such a situation.
  • If any misconduct takes place in connection to a test and the situation comes to the focus of the test personnel you may be dismissed from the test or ETS may cancel your scores or the test itself. Misconduct includes any sort of noncompliance with the Test Center Rules and Regulations.

Subject GRE test score reinstatement

  • Yes, it is possible to re-instate your Subject GRE scores even after you have cancelled them. The re-instatement is initiated on your request at the ETS within 60 days from your test date.
  • The re-instatement process will require an additional fee of $30.
  • You can mail or fax a written request to GRE Inquiries including your name, date of birth, test date, registration number, day-time contact number and the payment of $30.
  • You also need to include the required department codes and indicate the scores you want (for example only Subject test scores or a combination with the analytical writing scores as well). But whichever score you opt for, the tests should have been held on the same date.
  • You also have to select the score recipients or else you have to pay an extra amount of $15 per recipient you request for the scores to be sent at a later date.
  • Finally, the scores will be re-instated approximately on the mailing date for the paper-based test. You will receive the scores by mail and the designated score recipients shortly after that.

Subject GRE percentile

GRE percentile scores are important as these give a clear idea about how good you are. The raw score is just a commentary of your performance in the exam. But it’s the percentile score that makes you stand out in the crowd as it helps to make a comparative study of all the students and then place the students in an ascending order of quality. The foundational purpose of a GRE Subject test is to compare the test takers from various set-ups giving an idea about how good each one of them are.

To be precise, the percentile scores hint at the percentage of students who have scored less than you. The scores are the most important factor that facilitates your admission to a graduate school. The authorities give absolute importance to the percentile scores. Looking at your percentile score, they get a comprehensive view for consideration, though it is not the sole but one of the important factors effective in scanning students.

The paper score reports after the major paper-based test administration is over and it comes free of cost. The score comes approximately two times a week over the entire testing year.
